It had been a few weeks since Rex and Ellis started working together, a few weeks since they’d been on the job site together and enjoyed their brief intimate encounter. At first, it’d been a fling for Rex, but Ellis haunted his thoughts.

“Boss man, you gonna stand there all day tanning or get some work done?”

Rex kissed the face of his cell phone and sighed. “I’m waiting for a call, Zeke.”

“I guess you can’t do nothing but stand around when you’re waiting for a call, then, huh?” Zeke chuckled.

“I’m waiting for a call from the contract administrator. He’s supposed to have new plans for us to work off.”

“Yeah, I remember. You’ve been talking about it all week. If I didn’t know any better, I’d think you’re just excited to see him. Why don’t you ever get excited like this ‘bout seeing me?”

“Really?” Rex stared at Zeke, squinting his prominent brow before chuckling.

“Yeah, really. Hey, can you hold on to this for me while I seal it down?”

“Sure.” Rex slipped his cell phone in his pocket and lined a plank up with small grey hash marks. He clamped it in place with his weight while Zeke adjusted it in small increments before shooting nails into the corners.

“Thanks, man.” He moved down the plank, adding more nails. “Thought you were talking to ol’ what’s his face?”

“Vague.”

“The guy on the downlow.”

“Right. I was just fooling with him. We didn’t talk.”

“I mean, all right if you want to be technical about it. You’re not talking to the contractor either.”

“I could be.”

“You oughta wait until our job is finished, though. Business and pleasure don’t mix.”

Rex pressed his lips together, standing upright again and dusting his hands on his jeans. “Who told you that?”

“It’s the law of the land. No one had to tell me. Like I get it, he cute or whatever, but it’s gonna be nothing but problems if you go for it.”

“Yeah, I bet you’re right.”

“You bet? Boy, I know I’m right.”

“All right, all right. Here, I’ll get this side.”

“Thanks.” Zeke handed him the nail gun, and he secured the rest of the plank. At the last shot, his cell phone buzzed in his pocket, and he dropped the nail gun and jumped to his feet, snatching his cell phone out of his pocket and putting it to his ear.

“Hello?” He schooled his voice, stamping down his anticipation as he rested one hand on his exposed hips and paced in a circle.

“H-hi. Rex? Mr. Banks?”

“This is he,” Rex rumbled.

“H-hey. It’s-um-Ellis. I’ve got the new plans for you. I added the building material changes and several pages of instructions and measurements.”

“Cool. Thanks.”

“You don’t h-have to thank me. It’s my job.”

“Yeah, I know, but still, thanks. Can you bring them by the job site?”

“A-actually, I can’t. I was going to, but my car is having problems. It’s, I don’t know, making a noise. It’s making a weird noise. Can you send someone by to pick up the plans?”
